According to the 4th edition of our international barometer, based on data from 6 national federations, Germany dominates e-commerce in 3 categories: fashion, home electrical products and furniture. In the U.K., e-commerce accounted for 27% of retail sales last year. While the Netherlands is tending towards this level, France and Germany are between 10% and 13%. In the fashion and home electrical categories, e-commerce has been stabilising at 40% of retail sales, in the most mature countries. This is the case in Germany and in the Netherlands. Bucking physical retail, online fashion grew by double digits in the U.K. and in France last year, and remained steady in Germany. In Europe, after falling by 5.7% in 2022, 2023 was a year of recovery for e-commerce in most European markets. Our analysis covers France, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, Switzerland and Italy. Considering online sales of products only (excluding services), e-commerce rose from €349.8 billion in 2022 to €358.8 billion in 2023. That’s an increase of 2.6% year-on-year. However, this level remains lower than 2021, when online sales topped € 370 billion.
