EU: Draghi report on competitiveness urges investment in vocational training and deregulation

On September 9, former Italian prime minister and European Central Bank president Mario Draghi presented his report on European competitiveness, commissioned a year ago by European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen. The report proposes ways of tackling two major issues: the lack of skills and the administrative "burden" on businesses.

The Draghi report on competitiveness, which covers a wide range of issues – including energy, digital and artificial intelligence, and rare materials – was submitted two days before the announcement of the 2024-2029 Commission. Reappointed Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, who commissioned the report a year ago, indicated that many of its elements and proposals would be incorporated into the mission statements of the new Commissioners.…
