France: Amazon logistics subsidiary hit with heavy fine for employee surveillance

On January 23, the CNIL, France's data protection authority, made the decision to fine Amazon France Logistique for the illegal use of delivery preparation scanners to monitor employees. The company defends itself by saying that it wanted to make their daily lives easier.

The American multinational has been fined €32 million by the Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL). The independent administrative authority considers that the scanners, which are used both to give instructions to employees and to record them picking up a product for delivery, are used excessively to record the slightest “break or interruption”.
