Germany: four-day week niche and unpopular, German Economic Institute finds (study)

Between March and May 2024, the German Economic Institute (IW) surveyed human resources managers from 823 companies of all sizes and across all sectors on the topic of the four-day week with reduced working hours and full pay. The questions focused on their experience and perception of the model, at both the micro and macroeconomic levels. The results reveal widespread scepticism.

Does the four-day week, which has been extensively trialled in recent years, constitute a path to a more balanced and productive world of work? Or is it a model that is ultimately only attractive to a few specific organisations and sectors, which remains economically difficult for most companies to implement and is problematic in times of labour shortages?…
