Transnational bargaining: interview of Bart Samyn, deputy general secretary of IndustriAll Europe, on the European agreement for professional integration of young people signed with Safran

On March 28, Safran and IndustriAll Europe signed the first European agreement on the professional integration of young people. Bart Samyn, deputy general secretary of the European trade union federation and negotiating party in the agreement, is answering Planet Labor's questions on this negotiation. (Ref. 130211)

  • It’s the first European negotiation on the subject. How did the idea of integrating young people come up as a bargaining theme?

Bart Samyn. Actually, the idea was to negotiate a global approach for the anticipation of skills but, because of the founding nature of this agreement with Safran, we decided it was better to adopt a two-tier approach. First, we’ve decided to deal with the anticipation of skills from the perspective of recruitment, outside training and taking in young hires. Secondly, we will deal with the anticipation of skills need having regard to people who are already in the company. Along the way, we realized that this disassociation made it easier to reach an agreement.
