Great Britain: round three of naming and shaming employers not paying the national minimum wage embarrasses H&M and Welcome Break

In the third tranche of ‘naming and shaming’ employers who fail to pay their employees the national minimum wage (NMW), the government has announced the first cases of two major employers who failed  to pay the NMW: fashion clothes retailer, H&M, and hotel and motel group, Welcome Break. Government backing to this program continues with extra funding announced for 2015 and 2016.

H&M – Hennes & Mauritz UK Ltd – neglected to pay £2,604.87 to 540 workers while Welcome Break Holdings Ltd neglected to pay £1,318.70 to 19 workers. ‘Neglected’ is the term used by the government that covers a range of reasons ranging from incompetence to wilfulness. H&M and Welcome Break were among 37 employers who failed to pay their workers the NMW amounting to over £177,000 due in wage arrears and over £51,000 in financial penalties.…
