EU: the 13th ETUC Congress promotes a model of European unionism capable of establishing “its own agenda”

The four year action program that the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) Congress just adopted operates around three pillars: a strong economy for its citizens, stronger unions to defend democratic values as well as democracy in the workplace, and finally, a platform of ambitious social norms.

It is with the image of an active union, on the offensive, capable of “autonomously establishing its own agenda’ and not merely acting “in reaction to” that the new General Secretary of the ETUC, Luca Visentini (c.f. article No. 9285 for an interview with the new ETUC General Secretary) concluded his closing address. The work program entitled “For a Fair Society” was adopted on 02 October 2015, on the final day of the Congress and it sets out its main milestones.

Milestone number 1: argue convincingly that in order to change the course of Europe’s economy, both investment and internal demand need to be relaunched.…
