Spain: green light for new formulas to encourage partial, active and deferred retirement

On 22 January 2025, the Spanish parliament approved changes to the pension system designed to encourage people to work longer beyond the statutory retirement age. The text opens up several avenues for "improving the compatibility between retirement pension and work", with a gradual withdrawal from the labour market.

The Spanish parliament has validated the Royal Decree on pension reform that was passed by the Council of Ministers on 23 December 2024. It thus gives the green light to the mechanisms negotiated with the social partners, announced on 31 July 2024, which allow people to receive part of their pension while carrying on working and encourage people to postpone their retirement age by improving the amount of their future pension.…
