EU: UNI Europa has published its first results from a study across five European countries investigating the ‘gig economy’

Commissioned by the services union federation UNI Europa and carried out jointly by the Foundation for European Progressive Studies (FEPS), the independent research organization TNO Netherlands, and the University of Hertfordshire, the survey aims to investigate the size of the ‘gig economy’ in five European countries and gauge the size of this new form of online platform based employment relative to total employment. Following results from the United Kingdom in February 2016, and then from Sweden in March 2016, the results from the Dutch survey were released on 04 July 2016.

The studies are survey based. Uni Europa published the results from the Dutch study, in which one eighth of respondents said they had at some time earned money by putting forward their services* on a digital platform. These platforms allow many to boost their incomes. In fact, ‘for a substantial minority of crowd workers’, it is the only or main source of income (6% saying it is their only source of income and 14% that it represents more than half).
