Greece: companies increasingly relying on food coupons

Greece is struggling to emerge from the financial crisis and many companies are looking for ways to cut costs. Thus an increasing number of workers are being remunerated with a selection of benefits, which substitutes for a large part of their former salaries including food coupons that are now extremely popular. Official data indicates that more than 200,000 employees are receiving some of their remuneration in the form of food coupons.

More and more frequently new hire employment contracts are paying a percentage of salary (between 20% and 30%) in the form of coupons, with the rest being paid in cash. Payment in cash were developed following government capital controls implemented roughly 18 months ago to restrict cash withdrawals.
