It is with much disappointment that Alcan's European staff representation welcomed the European Commission's decision, rendered on October 2, which authorizes Rio Tinto's takeover of the Franco Canadian group. A delegation had met with the DG Competition about two weeks beforehand and Brussels' lack of interest in the industry's future was regarded as "revolting". The next step is now to hear Rio Tinto's representatives to be able to respond according to the commitments they take. (Ref. 070819)
