While the German employees of the biggest online store on the planet, Amazon, are dreading the opening of 2 new sorting sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, which could cause some sites to close in Germany, the Verdi services union went on the offensive and started an alliance with representatives from Solidarnosc, the Polish union, and OSPO, the Czech commerce union. They went to Dresden on December 2 in order to define a joint strategy with the German union. “We don’t want the sites to be set against each other,” warned a Solidarnosc representative. “Against a global group, we also want to present a global union front,” added a German colleague. Worried employees. Amazon, the American group, employs about 9,000 people in 8 sites in Germany, and may be able to relocate part of production towards Eastern Europe. Since the management of Amazon Europe announced, on October, the opening of three big logistics centers as of the summer of 2014 in Poland, concern has spread among the German sites, though the management denies (see article No. 130594).
