Argentina’s newly registered trade union: APP, the Association of Platform Personnel, is the first trade union in the Americas for workers in the ‘gig economy’. In the APP’s first press statement it stated ‘the union is seeking to federate those who transport and deliver products and people,’ while Uber struggles to get its business established in Argentina and several home delivery businesses have recently set up in the country including Glovo and Rappi. At the start of October the APP lodged its trade union registration documents with the Labor Ministry.
“These companies decide on what tariffs and commissions apply and they requires us to contribute to the business operations for which they themselves are responsible. We work without any insurance cover or fixed salaries,” explained the new trade union that criticizes platform interface conditions, which can change from month to month as well as the fact that companies threaten to block worker accounts without notice.
