As the January summer parliamentary truce came to a close Argentina’s social relations restarted where they had left off, namely within a climate of tension and conflict. With December’s pension reforms already having sparked a series of confrontations, the country’s social partners are now facing into two particularly controversial topics complete with problems and announcements of mobilization efforts. On the discussion agenda are both negotiations over annual salary agreements (especially in the banking sector) and the adoption of the labor law reform.
Banking sector union Asociación Bancaria has launched the first major mobilization of the month with strike action set for 09 February, which will be extended to a 48-hour strike on 19 and 20 February if agreement is not forthcoming. The union has rejected the employers’ offer of a 9% salary increase along with an inflation adjustment if prices rise faster than 9%.
