On May 19 and after four tense weeks, the annual negotiations in the four key sectors held by the Economics Ministry finally concluded in agreement. Pay rises for workers in the metals, retail, construction, and State sectors aligned to the government ceiling set at 27% that compensates for the high level of inflation. These joint agreements were signed not without dissent by some union quarters and a strike has been called for June 09. Nevertheless they do indicate the trend for the other sectors to follow.
Official ceiling set for pay rises. Under pressure from the Government the unions and employers representatives came round the negotiating table and on May 19 agreed on wage increases. On May 20, and with President Cristina Fernández present the unions and employers signed four joint agreements covering the metals, retail, construction, and State sectors. These agreement covering some 2 millions workers narrowly avoided a 36 hour strike scheduled by the influential metal workers for May 21....
