After concluding, in May 2006, an agreement on a group's committee and a group trade union cooperation, the management from the chemical group Arkema presented an agreement on the establishment of a European WC to be signed by union organizations. Only the French unions should sign this text, which the European Mine, Chemical and Energy workers' Federation (EMCEF) has rejected. (Ref. 070428)
With 17,000 colleagues (76% in Europe) in about forty countries and 5.7 billion euros in sales, Arkema was born from the merger between TotalFina’s and Elf’s chemistry after the two groups got closer in 1999. Named Atofina in 2000, this branch then became Arkema in 2004 and entered the stock market in May 2006. 80% of its European workforce is in France, which means that French union organizations (CFDT, CGT, CGC) are a majority within the special negotiations body (see our story n°06937).
