Austria: 190,000 heating engineers, assembly operators and mechatronics engineers get an average 3.2 percent increase

The social partners in the "Metallgewerbe" industry, which represents 43,000 SMEs and nearly 190,000 employees (heating engineers, assembly operators, mechatronics engineers...) signed a wage agreement on October 9 in Vienna, valid for one year starting January 1, 2013. Minimum wages in the sector's grid and apprenticeship pay will increase by 3.4 percent and all other wages by 3.2 percent. Unlike the metal industry, where negotiations are at a standstill after three meetings, this agreement was wrapped up in just a few hours. (Ref. 120593)

After a quick negotiation on Tuesday, October 9 in Vienna, the social partners in the “Metallgewerbe” industry presented a wage agreement for the 190,000 employees in the sector. “Because of the low growth prospects for next year, this agreement is a perfectly decent compromise” employers’ negotiators, Andreas Lahner and Siegfried Steiner, said. Rainer Wimmer, leader of the Pro-GE union, said this agreement was secured “after a hard-fought struggle” but shows that the social partners’ debate
