It was not until the third summit meeting and after 17 hours of negotiation between Erich Foglar, boss of the Metal-Textile- Food union (GMTN) and Hermann Haslauer, the employers’ representative, that a new collective agreement confirming an overall wage hike of 3.5% was signed on October 30, 2007 in Vienna. In order to meet the employers’ demand for the increase to have fixed and variable clauses, the agreement contains several variants allowing companies, in agreement with the works councils, to forgo the increase in view of their economic situation.
