Belgium: government prolongs anticrisis measures with the social partners’ consent

Extension. On September 15th, the social partners agreed to the extension of three anticrisis measures adopted over a year ago.  These measures affect: the extension of short-time working to employees; the reduction of working time during a crisis via company collective agreements; individual working time cuts within the framework of time credit during a crisis; and, finally, a €1,666 crisis bonus employers have to pay if they let an employee go. Minister for Employment Affairs Joëlle Milquet said that, with these measures, “several thousands of jobs were saved because structural layoffs were avoided.”  On August 15, 2010, about 2,271 businesses allegedly appealed to the temporary suspension of employees’ labor contract and to crisis time credit.  Besides, it seems that 13,978 requests for crisis bonuses were introduced on August 5th.
