Belgium: mediation on 2011-2012 cross-industry agreement failed

Employers’ support.  Will the Belgian government override the rejection of the FGTB, second largest union in the country?  The day of consultation on Monday, February 14th (see our dispatch No.  110103) left the social partners divided.  While they didn’t like the cancellation of the study on the indexation of wages planned in the initial draft (see our dispatch No.  110040), employers’ representatives nevertheless validated the mediation proposal, calling for a quick implementation of the agreement.  Same version for the CSC Christian union, the majority union at national level: it is requesting the quick implementation of the agreement.  Employers’ organizations refusing to reopen talks irritated the FGTB.  Anne Demelenne, FGTB general secretary, condemned this stance which she says is too exclusive.  She says that, while the mediation proposal involves the State for the payment of the minimum wage increase and of the planned exceptions for the notice, employers could be more open and pay for these.
