Launched in 2010, the negotiations for this merger were accelerated with the 2012 social election. Indeed, fully hit by the crisis in the textile industry, the FGTB-TVD had, for a while, looking for a broader support base. Now, the General Federation represents about 60 sectors, including construction, chemistry, non-merchant, textile, diamond and quarries, among others.
More weight. The merger between the Textile, Clothing and Diamond federation and the FGTB’s General Federation is linked to the textile industry and related industries declining in Belgium. There have been waves of closing and restructurings leading to a lot of job cuts, notably in 2008/09 when the losses were most important.
