Belgium: union confederations are requiring the extension of the right to information and consultation to companies with less than 20 employees

Whereas Belgium is two years late in the implementation of the directive on workers' information and consultation, the two main union confederations CSC and FGTB established a common front to claim union representation in small businesses with less than 20 employees. This stand is vividly criticized by the management. (Ref. 070282)

The 2002 directive on workers’ information and consultation owes its presence to the closure of the Renault-Vilvorde site, next to Brussels, in 1997, which took place with no staff’s information or consultation whatsoever. Facing the emotion generated by this case, the European Commission had then used this file to enact minimum rules in terms of the workers’ rights to information and consultation.
