Since 2013 Brazil has witnessed a rising number of child labor occurrences among children aged under ten. According to the latest study by the IBGE, Brazil’s Institute of Geography and Statistics, almost 800,000 of children under ten were working in 2015. The institute published the data on 12 June, the ILO’s World Day Against Child Labor. The organizers recall that child labor among the youngest children is a contributory factor towards adolescent labor.
From among the five to ten year olds, 60% live in the country’s rural North and Northeastern regions. However child and adolescent exploitation is broad-based across sectors of activity including agriculture, catering, industry, and waste disposal treatment. Thus the institute holds that about three million children and adolescents are having their right to an education withheld.
