Brazil’s parliament has just returned to work after the summer recess and proceedings got underway with a presentation by the government on 07 February of a slightly altered draft for reforming the country’s social protection system and in particular the pensions system.
This reform, one of President Temer’s key agenda points ever since he acceded to power (c.f. article No. 10118), has been systematically ‘kicked into the long grass’ for months because it secure sufficient parliamentary support. Bahia representative Arthur Maia, Rapporteur for the reform subsequently reworked the text in a final attempt to garner the Chamber of Deputies’ vote that is set for 20 and 28 February 2018.
