At the start of September Brazil’s Labor Ministry, the MPT ,brought an action to the courts against automaker Mercedes-Benz that has a facility in São Bernardo do Campo, in the São Paulo area, accusing the company of having discriminated against and coerced several of the 1,400 workers that were made redundant in 2016.
According to the MPT the company’s bosses pursued a strategy aimed at forcing workers they had already identified for redundancy so that the workers would opt for the voluntary redundancy solution that had been put in placed in conjunction with the ABC metals union (São Paulo’s worker catchment areas of Santo André, São Bernardo, São Caetano).
