Brazil : national campaign for the reduction of working time

At mid-April, the two major unions in the metal sector (CNM/CUT and CNTM) launched a national campaign for the reduction of the workweek with stoppages and demonstrations throughout the country, the highlight being Friday April 25 called the “national day for the reduction of the workweek”. The unions are involved in talks with the government, employers’ organizations and business federations to achieve approval of the 40-hour week by the National Congress, the seat of the Brazilian MPs. The project figures in two bills currently under discussion. The workweek had in the past been reduced from 48 to 44 hours by article 7 of the Federal Constitution in 1988. But previously metal  workers had been the first to achieve the 44-hour workweek.
