Brazil: Sao Paulo metalworkers on strike for pay

The metalworkers’ federation of the State of Sao Paulo (EMF/CUT-SP), affiliated with the Unified Workers’ Central, has been organizing several strikes and mobilization actions within the framework of the “wage campaign,” the sector’s bargaining session.  The union of the key industrial region in the country is promising another round of paralysis ob Monday, September 17, after the success of that of September 10.  In the Sao Paulo area, 56,000 workers went on strike, causing 50 businesses to stop working.  Similar mobilizations took place in all other metal sections in the region.  Even though the movement hasn’t spread to auto assembly lines, they were affected by the holdup in supplies for parts and components from other factories.  In this sector, increases were already negotiated during the 2011 wage campaign.  For the moment, 45,000 metalworkers in the Sorocaba area confirmed that they would go on strike on the 17th.
