Cambodia is currently experiencing a protest movement in the textile industry to increase minimum wage and improve working conditions. On January 4, the government violently repressed a demonstration, causing the death of 4 people. This workers’ mobilization is in line with a conflicting political situation in the country and with a protest movement across south-east Asia in the textile industry.
Claims. This protest movement aims to secure wage increases and better working conditions. Cambodian unions want current monthly minimum wage to nearly double, from $80 up to $160, considered as the minimum to live a decent life.
