Following complaints from a group of NGOs, an investigation has been launched into Walmart and Hugo Boss which are two of three companies being accused of sourcing from factories suspected of using forced Uyghur labour.
On 24 August, Canada’s corporate ethics watchdog, the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) opened investigations into three companies (Walmart, Hugo Boss, Diesel) over their alleged use of forced Uighur labour through their subcontracting channels. The decisions to launch the investigations stem from complaints lodged by a coalition of NGOs in June 2022, and an unsatisfactory period of discussions underway since then.
