The European Work-life balance directive for working parents and carers introduced a specific 5-day leave period per year for workers providing personal care or support to a relative or person living with disability or severe illness in the same household. Although 24 EU Member States have now introduced carers’ leave, their individual application conditions vary widely and they do not always meet the EU Directive’s requirements.
EU Member States that still were not providing carers’ leave had until 02 August 2022 to introduce this leave period into their national legislation (c.f. article No.12843). This was the case, for example, in Malta, Luxembourg, and Denmark, which have since introduced a 5-day leave period for employees caring for a disabled or seriously ill relative, in accordance with the provisions of the European Directive.
