Over the next five years Chile’s working week will be gradually shortened from 45 (currently) to 40 hours. On 11 April, following unanimous Senate approval earlier on 21 March and in a rare show of cross-party co-operation, a majority of parliamentary deputies easily approved the new legislation which provides for a flexible application that can adapt both to sector specificities and to the schedules of parents with children under 12 years of age.
It is a “pro-family project” that aims “for the well-being of all”, “essential for advancing towards a new Chile that is more just with a happier life”, welcomed President Gabriel Boric, who had revived the draft legislation following its initial Communist party-led submission to Parliament in 2017.
