Chile: country gearing up for female mobilization action in March

On 08 February, several of the country’s feminist organizations within the feminist 8M movement called for major protest action in March in the defense of women’s rights within the world of work, in society at large, and in the area of marital violence. The coordination committee has presented a demonstration schedule that will start on ‘Super Feminist Monday’, 02 March, and that will culminate on 08 and 09 March with a general women’s strike. Although based on women’s rights, the organizations sponsoring the demonstrations expect other broader demands will be added to the feminist theme, which will reflect the wave of discontent that was seen in October 2019 and in which women also played a predominant role. The schedule has set 04, 05, 07, and 11 March as mobilization dates and support is expected from other social and political organizations. Chile’s largest trade union organization, the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (Unified Workers’ Central, CUT), has already expressed its support for the 09 March general feminist strike and it unanimously decided to actively participate and support the strike action.
