Colombia: sugar workers on strike for a month

About 20.000 workers in the sugar agro-industry have been on strike since September 15. They want to be employed directly by large refiners; they demand wage increases and better working conditions. Sugar companies won't collectively bargain with workers' cooperatives. (Ref. 080799)

The production of sugar and its by-products, such as ethanol, has been paralyzed for a month in Colombia, as a consequence of the conflict between the companies and the workers. The situation is especially tense in exploitations in the Valle del Cauca region, the largest sugar production area, where almost all 18.000 cane cutters and industry workers suspended their activity.
