The center-right Czech government has approved the long-discussed "Pro-Family Package" of new regulations designed to make life easier for working families with children. The package encompasses seven separate measures to support families, and could come into effect by January 2010 if approved in parliament. It notably plans the recognition of a one-week paternity leave sponsored by the social security or even in-house daycare centers. (Ref. 080923)
Legal implementation will require a number of draft amendments to several Czech laws, notably the Czech labour code, employment and income tax laws, which are set to be debated in the lower house in the coming weeks. According to the Czech Minister of Labour and Social Affairs Petr Necas, the aim of the package is “not to create passive support for the family, but to achieve an environment that makes it easier for parents to reconcile work and family life”.
