Denmark: 3F and TIB prepare merger for 2011

In 2004 already, when 3F (Fagligt Fælles Forbund) was born from the merger between the General Union of Danish Workers (SiD) and the Women Workers’ Union (KAD), the negotiations included the TIB union (Træ-Industri-Byg, which mostly represented carpenters and wood workers), which decided not to join the union. Convinced that a “big single national union” is the key to face labor market changes (see our dispatch No. 090817), 3F leader Poul Erik Skov Christensen repeated, last year, the offer to merge with TIB. The two unions have tightened their bond and increased cooperation over the past few years, especially in construction, regarding the fight against social dumping and the working environment. This “positive» experience on the field and the urgency to “improve their efficiency” against employers and labor market challenges led the managements of the two unions to agree to prepare the merger last December.
