On January 11th, the European Court for human rights, acting upon two Danish lawsuits, has condemned the closed shop clauses that oblige all employees of one company to join a determined labor union. In the cases Sorensens vs Danemark and Rasmussen vs Denmark, the
Strasbourg-based European Court for human rights has condemned Denmark to pay
75 000 euros to two Danish citizens who had been forced to join a union in
order to get a job. This represents a failure for the Danish union movement as
well as for the exclusive agreements practice. This practice involves about 200
