After long and tough negotiations, with the Danish People’s Party securing increased border controls, the government managed, on may 13th, to conclude an agreement reforming the pension system, partly implementing the draft presented last January (see our dispatch No. 110077). Minister of Finance Claus Hjort Frederiksen rejoiced that a “majority of responsible parties in Parliament supported an ambitious reform ensuring a responsible line in the economic policy.” According to government estimates, this reform should help increase the workforce by 65,000 people in 2020, while “improving” public finances of nearly DKK 18bn (€2,414 billion) the same year.
