“Today we are creating the union movement of the future”, declared Lizette Risgaard, president of the LO (the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions) and future president of the new confederation after the merger between LO and the FTF (Confederation of Professionals in Denmark). On 13 April the merger was voted in during an extraordinary Congress, the goal of which was to render the merger effective from 01 January 2019. However the decision to merge was not a unanimous one, and some unions are threatening to quit the body.
Prior to the reform. LO, FTF, and Akademikerne (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations) have been Denmark’s three union confederation bodies. LO membership comes in at just under just under one million with under 900,000 in terms of active members. This is a general umbrella body comprising 17 different unions of all different sizes.
