Officially the term used was ‘relief’ but the agreement struck between Sweden and Denmark that pulls Post Danmark back from the brink of bankruptcy involved complicated negotiations, not least because of particularities surrounding Post Danmark’s parent company PostNord. Negotiations also had to define a new organization that would be able to tackle challenges down the line as well as identifying the financial liabilities of each of the new organizational elements. While the Swedish trade unions seem quite satisfied with the outcome the Danish unions still fear they will be excluded from any future major decisions.
A company with very specific issues. PostNord was established in 2009 via a merger between the Swedish and Danish postal operations. While Sweden owns 60% of PostNord’s capital both owners have equal voting rights.
Since 2000 letter deliveries in Denmark have plummeted by about 80% resulting in negative operating income since 2012. Another blow has come from the Danish government’s digitalization policy drive, which encourages state administrations and hospitals to rely on digital documentation
