Denmark : unions and employers propose joint solutions to fight labor shortage

“The shortage of skilled labor will be a great challenge for our society during many years. Business leaders and employees must therefore collaborate to find a compromise for adequate political solutions”. In these terms the director of DA, Jorgen Neergaard Larsen, explained the agreement  negotiated on February 13 with LO. Both organizations propose to take up the labor shortage challenge on the Danish labor market ( see article n°080117) through concrete proposals on the organization, training, and recruitment of foreign labor force. According to LO President Harald Borsting, this makes it possible “ better ensure that the hiring of foreign workers will respect the Danish model” in order to avoid pressure on wages and “social dumping”, not forgetting Danish job seekers and workers with limited initial training, because “ the increase in foreign recruitment must not be separated from getting Danes back to work”. The point of departure features 26 government initiatives to increase international recruitment. The social partners are thereby putting forward a recruitment plan to facilitate market access for highly skilled foreigners and eliminate certain bureaucratic procedures for less skilled employees. They recommended that a large parliament majority adopt these initiatives as quickly as possible.
