Denmark: unions mobilized against unemployment insurance reform

The government’s parties (Det Konservative Folkeparti and Venstre) and the Danish People’s Party (Dansk Folkeparti) signed, on may 25th, an “agreement for the recovery of the Danish economy” aimed to “strengthen” public finances, with DKK 24 billion (€3.2bn) in 2011-13 via different reforms in several sectors. Some of the highly criticized measures impacting the labor market include the introduction of a DKK 3,000 (€403) annual limit for tax deductions from union contributions and the reform of the unemployment insurance system.
