Following the failure of management-union negotiations, Transnet, the main railway workers union, has decided to launch today a first wave of warning strikes, an initiative in accordance with the collective agreements legislation. Work stoppages of a few hours mobilizing several thousand workers have started in the Lander of North Rhine Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate and Sarre. Transnet is demanding Deutsche Bahn to work out an agreement, whatever the privatisation formula adopted, upholding the current collective agreements which offer job security to the 130,000 workers up to 2010. This claim follows the conclusions of the report submitted early September by two mediators confirming the fears of Transnet alleging that: any change in the structure of the company such as the outsourcing of certain activities or the separation of the railroad network from its operations and services would nullify the present agreement on job security.
