Sustainable transport. The European Transport Workers’ Federation, ETF, supports “the promotion of sustainable transport” as indicated in one of the resolutions adopted in late may, indicating: “the notion of sustainable transport cannot be limited to environmental aspects, which the public wrongfully thinks. Sustainability is three-dimensional: environmental, social and economic.” The Federation notably insists on the establishment of fair transport prices meeting the requirements of quality public service while respecting, on the one hand, the rights of the sector’s workers and guaranteeing, on the other, the application of the “polluter payes principle.” The resolution is also vigorously opposed to the liberalization of transport and demands a new regulation of the sector particularly via local public policies. The issue of social dumping, especially the controversy on the ECJ’s case law on posted workers, was also at the heart of the congress. The ETF calls for mobilization so union rights prevail over European economic freedom. It notably joins the claim expressed by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) in favor of a Social Progress Protocol subjecting economic freedom to social rights and labor law.
