EU: Commission seeks to shape globalization

On 10 May the European Commission published a reflection document entitled, ‘Harnessing Globalisation’ affirming that solutions do not lie in national protectionism or in isolationism, or indeed in laissez-faire. For the EU Commission, solutions lie in Europe’s capacity to speak with one voice during multilateral talks, to strengthen global governance, and to promote faire trade thus ‘shaping’ globalization so that it reflects Europe’s values. It also has to support Europe’s economies so that they can all take advantage of the positive effects of globalization and secure a better redistribution of its gains. ‘Better late than never,” reacted the ETUC.

This reflection document represents the second in a series of five that are looking to focus the wide ranging debate on the EU’s future, which the EU Commission in its White Paper presented on 01 March 2017 (c.f. article No. 10176) and in which is underlined that the future of the EU lies in its capacity to limit the negative effects of globalization on Europe’s population.
