EU: Community institutions look into the possibility of European unemployment insurance

Even though it was completed a few months ago, the European Commission’s project on the creation of European unemployment insurance hasn’t been presented yet, nor included in the communication on the social dimension of the EMU published on October 2.  Convinced of the merits of this measure, the European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affairs is pushing for the introduction of unemployment insurance in the eurozone, temporarily reducing public social spending in badly affected countries and thus acting as an automatic stabilizer.  However, even though the idea is gaining ground, no concrete initiative has been taken so far.  (Ref.  130610)
