The European Union will soon have new rules framing imports of conflict minerals that will include mandatory upstream responsibilities and voluntary downstream responsibilities.
Negotiations continued late into the night of 15 June, with representatives from the European Parliament, the European council, and the European Commission finally agreeing on a principle agreement addressing proposed regulations over conflict minerals, minerals typically found in everyday products, and which have contributed to the financing of armed conflict in Africa.
