EU: European Commission adopts communication on strengthening the social dimension of the economic and monetary union

On October 2, the European Commission adopted a communication entitled, “strengthening the social dimension of the economic and monetary union (EMU).  This highly anticipated document follow the call made by the European Council in June for the social dimension to be taken into consideration in the EU’s annual economic decision political cycle.  To meet this requirement, the European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, László Andor, proposes adding indicators to monitor differences in terms of social matters and employment.  What should have been the star measure, namely the introduction of a European unemployment insurance scheme as a supplement in countries most badly hit by the crisis, was not included in the communication in the end.  (Ref.  130583)
