EU: European Parliament and Council of Ministers look at funding to aid employees hit by globalisation

Harsh criticism by the economic and monetary commission of the EP foretells lively exchange at the Plenary Assembly. Indeed, a heavy job of persuasion lies in store for the French MP after the rejection of her report by the Economic and Monetary Affairs commission, the only one that had not voted in favour on the ground that a globalisation adjustment fund would distort competition. The European MPs are still very much divided between those considering the fund superfluous and other esteeming that, on account of its allocation (500 millions €), it will not be of any use. Adding to the debate, a researcher of Leeds University, Christopher Fords, is leading a study to assess the future impact of a globalisation adjustment fund. The study, not yet completed, already indicates that the fund might well provide added value inasmuch as short term aid mechanisms do not exist.
