After taking similar action over asbestos, the European Union is now looking to boost the protection of workers from lead. Many workers are still exposed to this reprotoxic substance, which is estimated to cause up to 15% of adult asthma.
On 8 September, the European Parliament’s Committee on Employment and Social Affair approved the proposal from the European Commission to amend its original directive with limits of workplace exposure to lead. The text would cut the occupational exposure limits over eight hours by five times, from 0.15 milligrams per cubic meter to 0.03mg/m3.
