This social dialogue committee was created after several recommendations by the High Level Group for the Competitiveness of the Agro Food Industry, organized by the European Commission in 2000. In a global context of decreasing productivity, the final report of this forum, which gathers the sector’s key stakeholders, recommends setting up social dialogue, which was until now only established in the sugar industry. The High Level Group also mentioned the need to make the sector more appealing to young people, all the while pointing to an increasingly ageing workforce. It especially called for better identification of the sector’s training needs. The Work Program revealed by the new social dialogue committee provides that, after the skills study, the social partners could adopt a joint communication to improve the employability of the sector’s workers and encourage the exchange of good practices between the 27 EU States to maintain older workers active.
